ROBERT J. "BOB" INMAN of Palm Harbor, Florida, formerly of Cleveland, OH, died April 14, 2016 at the age of 86.
Bob began his career in 1956 as a trade embalmer serving funeral directors in a six-county area of northeast Ohio. In 1962 he expanded his embalming business to handle the transportation of bodies from the Cleveland market for out of town funeral directors. In 1969 he founded the National Association of Mortuary Shippers, serving as its first president. In 1971 he established Cremation Service, Inc., one of the largest volume crematories in the state of Ohio. Around this time Bob began presenting Embalming and Restorative Arts Seminars representing the Champion Company. For over 20 years, he crisscrossed the country doing embalming and restorative art demonstrations in 25 states, for thousands of funeral directors and embalmers.
In 1976 he became Regional Director for Continental Mortuary Air Shippers, a national shipping company, and when CMAS closed in 1979 he founded Inman Nationwide Shipping. Today Inman Shipping Worldwide is the largest shipping company of its type. In May 2014 Bob and his wife Marilyn A. Nixon-Inman announced the sale of their company to DW McComb Group.
Bob served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science and was a member of that Board for over 25 years. In 1982 he was elected to the British Institute of Embalmers of Birmingham, England. He became an organizer and past president of the North American Division of the BIE. In 2003, he was given the Degree of Fellowship, the highest honor given to a BIE member.
He was a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, Ohio Funeral Directors Association, FIATIFTA, International Cemetery Crematory and Funeral Association, American Cemetery Mortuary Conference, was a past president of the Ohio Embalmers Association, a past president of the Cleveland Embalmers Association, a past president of the Cremation Association of North America, and was elected to membership in the Georgia Academy of Embalming. Bob was a 1950 graduate of Cleveland College of Mortuary Science.
A member of the Rotary Club, Bob had perfect attendance for the past 35 years. A Memorial Service will be held May 27, 2016 in Cleveland.
